Can Age Reflect Vibrational Frequency?
We see living in to our 80s as an achievement, but I suspect that’s falling far short of human’s actual potential. Living in to our 80s is like, “Congratulations. You’ve done an above average job navigating a world where FDA approved sunscreens contain carcinogenic ingredients, and grocery stores are places companies making “food” profit on dreams of eating sugar and calling it breakfast.”
In the video game of life, +5 years extra points for you.
In 1880 the average life expectancy in the United States was 39.4 years. Mind blowing. Imagine telling these Gilded Age citizens gawping over electric lighting and skyscrapers that 100 years in the future people would live almost twice as long and wear neon leggings.
I hazard the 1880s citizens would lift an unshapely eyebrow, mutter they were late for church, and sidestep anyone spewing such nonsense. Showing them a picture of Madonna dancing on MTV as proof would only hasten their departure.
When we are ensconced in a flimsy film of “truth” based on experiential evidence it can be hard to stretch our minds to what’s actually possible. I don’t know how far the capacity for human life extends, but I definitely believe if mom jeans can look sexy now, 80 can be the new 60. It takes about the same stretch of imagination.
Let’s take a closer look at the side effects we can experience as we become higher vibration people.
Aging may be a physical reflection of our frequency, and how we’ve treated ourselves mentally, physically and emotionally.
A myriad of tiny decisions, feelings and events reflecting back to us in the mirror when we smile. Wisdom comes from what’s been felt and processed, and ill health may arise from what has not.
The Relationship Between Vitality, Vibration & Resistance
Chinese Medicine refers to our vitality as Jing. We are born with a certain amount, but like a car battery, when it’s gone it’s gone. When we are living a life working a job we don’t like, in a relationship where we constantly argue with our partner, or studying something in school we aren’t interested in, these are all examples of resistance that use up Jing faster than normal.
I suspect the amount of resistance we allow in our lives influences our physical appearance and health.
Imagine the resistance created when we walk into the wind. It takes way more effort to move forward. Effort takes energy. When we spend our vitality pushing against something, or relying on willpower to act, we use vitality faster and diminish vibration.
This can reflect in the physical body as wrinkles, gray hair, bags under the eyes, even organ failure at a more extreme level.
Conversely, what happens when you increase your vibration? When we are working on something we love we loose track of time. It often feels effortless, and can be invigorating, life giving. I’ve always viewed this as hooking up to the energy of creation. It’s a free ride.
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” ~Sophia Loren
We don’t need to use our Jing when we are in flow, laughing with a friend we genuinely enjoy vs. someone we are trying to impress, or being flexible vs. stubborn in the face of change.
The more we can use this energy and release resistance, we have potential to live longer because we aren’t wasting Jing doing things we dislike. As we hit our stride with a higher vibration our body has more energy and can function better. We look younger. We feel more relaxed because we aren’t head down, pushing in to the wind.
We are riding the flow of life.
When we are going with the flow and following our inner voice, that’s when the wind is at our back and we’re moving toward a higher vibration state.
We begin to increasingly experience more synchronicity in life, and laughter comes easier. I’m starting to suspect what we call aging can partially be attributed to the amount of resistance in our lives. It reflects back to us on our faces, and inside our bodies.
The “Betty White Effect”
Think of 1800s photography. So many people look decades older than their age by today’s standards. I find myself wondering how much of this can be attributed to resistance; life was harder then.
Certainly, there’s more to it than resistance. Sun damage, sleep, physical touch, food quality etc. I’m just suspicious resistance and vibrational frequency may play more of a role in aging than we’ve been calculating.
I affectionately think of this as the “Betty White Effect.” Whether true or not, the idealistic me imagines we all have capacity to be as vivacious as Betty in our elder years; it depends on the choices we make in our younger ones.
If we go through life saying yes to things we don’t want to do, consuming media meant to scare us, suppressing anger instead of releasing it, and not giving our body much to work with but processed food- that’s where I suspect we risk becoming the cranky elderly person yelling at people to get off their lawn.
“I know unless I'm true to myself I couldn't be happy. Too much emphasis is placed today on externals and too little on character.” ~Betty White
Looking young and feeling vibrant is more than vitamins and gym memberships. It’s how we are living the hours of our life we aren’t at the gym.
An hour at a spin class, bed at 9:30, and eating high frequency foods can’t make obsolete the effects of a life walking in to the wind.
When we live being true to ourselves, as Betty recommends, we may not need to hit the yoga studio to feel good, or need caffeine to wake up. We might just be naturally energized and relaxed.
Once I started reorganizing my life to remove resistance I noticed I didn’t need to visit the chiropractor at all anymore. Nor did I need acupuncture to sleep, or two yoga classes a week to feel relaxed. It appears I was spending hours every week undoing the effects of not following my inner wisdom.
My body was holding the knowledge for me, waiting for me to pay attention. Finding this physical ease is an example of what happens when you elevate your vibration.
Aging is when we deny ourselves our intuitions, or creative impulses, in the name of responsibility or what “should” be done.
Aging is following rules and becoming constrained by them.
It’s an advance of years without the self reflection to turn experiences in to wisdom, instead of trauma based reactive patterns or vitriol.
Aging isn’t just about wrinkles. It’s something that happens internally and externally.
“Most people don't grow up. Most people age. They find parking spaces, honor their credit cards, get married, have children, and call that maturity. What that is, is aging.” ~Maya Angelou
The Relationship Between a Higher Vibration & Anti-Aging
Anti-aging appears to follow the expansion or contraction of vibrational frequency. If our physical bodies are reflections of our inner world, as we elevate our internal worlds our physical bodies have the ability to shift with internal growth. Here’s an example.
When I lived in Bali for a stint I received a few massages from an older gentleman who used to be a drummer for a popular 60s rock band. I forget the name now, but we’d all know it if I could remember. (This is why I love the expat scene in Bali. It’s a cast of characters.) My referral to him came with the disclaimer of, “Just be ready. He’s intense.”
Over this man’s post-band decades of massage he’d noticed trends in the holding patterns of bodies, and the belief systems held by clients.
He guided clients to analyze their belief systems while he massaged certain areas, and gave prompts for the beliefs he typically noticed aligned with people who weren’t tight in that area.
He was so effective he had me sobbing all over the table feeling the truth in his gentle suggestions about my beliefs and the tension in my body- and this was even during my period where I wasn’t in to crying yet.
The physical release I felt was like nothing I’d ever experienced. Afterward, we smoked a joint together, played with his new kitten, and I was on my way.
Slowly, the effects diminished and I couldn’t figure out why.
Looking back, I was unable to hold the new belief architecture he helped me assemble. With his support and eye contact I found the power to tentatively shift some low vibration beliefs, and I got to physically experience what living with those higher vibration beliefs would feel like. For about a week.
Then I wasn’t strong enough to hold them on my own. Anchoring new higher vibration beliefs takes tons of repetitive action in alignment with the new belief system, and I didn’t get that yet. Returning to my habitual beliefs and actions reverted my body right back to where I was pre-massage.
My inner vibration shifted, and my body followed. What we believe internally is so important to how we feel physically.
This same principle can be applied to what we see when we look in the mirror. I’ll use another personal example. I recently had a somewhat transcendent experience where I may have finally hit the root of a lifelong wound I’ve been working to heal… for eight years.
During the meditation where this occurred I had the sensation of feeling like I just fractured my own universe. It felt like glass shattering, in a good way.
Afterward I scrolled through images in my mind that typically upset me on this topic. Nothing. I’ve been behaving differently in ways that surprise even me. And here’s the rub: When I look in the mirror I look years younger. Someone else might not notice it right away, but I do.
Muscles around my eyes and mouth relaxed. I don’t look so concerned. It’s like a younger version of me bobbed back to the surface. It appears my outer and inner worlds both shifted simultaneously. I’ve had many experiences like this before, just not at this scale. It appears my face was reflecting my inner angst.
It’s exciting to wonder just how much power we have to shift the appearance and feel of our bodies through inner work.
Plus, if healing this wound impacted me in visible ways, what ways might it have impacted inner body functions or organs in ways I can’t immediately discern?
I’ve come to believe focusing some of our attention on learning how to enhance our vibration has potential to elevate multiple aspects of our lives. If elevating vibration is a side effect of inner work, then looking and feeling younger can be a pleasant side effect of raising your vibration.
